Research Trip September / October 2006 - Day Care

Well we have looked at nurseries for the children on this trip and my jaw hit the floor, I thought the UK was expensive but it is even more so in Calgary. 

We visited a day nursery in Woodbine everything seemed ok and the set up was similar to the one the kids go to in the UK but the price was a little high it would basically cost nearly $2000 a month for the two boys to go in full time!! There were no part time places at that particular nursery and most seemed to say full time so I am a little down on that I will need to research it more once we are established and settled in our chosen area wherever that may be.

The other alternatives are:-

• A nanny but that won’t give the children the interaction with others that we think is important.

• Church groups which have the potential of being good but of course the children cannot be left there so this is restricting when it comes to part-time work.

• A Day Home – which is basically where a Mum takes in other children to look after them. While this is potentially a workable compromise there are some reservations we have with this, primarily around the Mum that we would leave the boys with. Clearly we (and the boys) have to be 100% comfortable with this situation if it is to work. There are also all sorts of issues around insurance, registration etc.

• There are also some things they the boys can do at the YMCA but like the church groups this does not allow for any form of part time work.

I guess you can see that this is still an area that requires research. We’ll keep you informed through our Journal what we discover and finally decide upon.
